Rana Siu Inboden Testified at Congressional-Excutive Commission on China

Dr. Rana Siu Inboden, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and Faculty Affiliate of the Asia Policy Program, testified recently to the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC), along with Teng Biao, Hauser Human Rights Scholar and Hunter College & Pozen Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago, and Sophie Richardson, China Director at Human Rights Watch. In 2022 the Commission marked the start of its third decade monitoring the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) compliance with international human rights standards and developments of rule of law in the PRC. The Commission’s annual report and other publications provide a detailed multi-decade narrative of the PRC’s record on human rights and rule of law. To help guide the Commission in its continuing efforts to assess China’s record on human rights and rule of law, this hearing heard testimony on the changes in China’s domestic situation, the international legal landscape, and Chinese Communist Party efforts to shape both. “In the 20 years since the CECC was established, one of the most profound changes is an emboldened China that actively works to dilute UN human rights procedures and norms,” said Dr. Inboden.
