Newest Volume of “Korea Policy” Includes Articles Presented at Joint APP-KEI Event

In October 2024, the Clements-Strauss Asia Policy Program co-hosted a panel event with the Korea Economic Institute of America on the US-ROK alliance and emerging technology. Articles presented at the conference are included in the latest issue of KEI’s journal, Korea Policy. The Fall 2024 issue is entitled “Broadening the Alliance: New Frontiers in US-South Korea Cooperation”.


The US-South Korea Global Comprehensive Strategic Alliance: Cooperation on Semiconductor Supply Chains and Technology by Soyoung Kwon: This paper explores the complex dynamics of the US-ROK alliance, especially in the context of economic security and technological cooperation amid intensifying US-China competition. It offers a comprehensive analysis of US-South Korea cooperation in the semiconductor supply chain within the framework of a global comprehensive strategic alliance, highlighting its achievements, identifying opportunities for further development, addressing potential challenges, and suggesting ways to enhance future collaboration within the alliance framework.

Canvasing Variations in US-South Korea Cooperation on AI and Quantum Technology by Sanghyun Han: This paper outline bilateral cooperation the United States and South in areas of AI and quantum technologies, while offering a brief introduction to each technology. It also offers policy recommendations, such as expanding research collaboration, to enhance cooperation between the countries.

Clean Energy Pragmatism as a Spark for US-South Korea Relations by Elan Sykes: This paper explores clean energy pragmatism in the bilateral context while applying its framework to three technologies: batteries, hydrogen, and nuclear power. It will also explain how resolving roadblocks for cooperation could provide the US and South Korea with a vital source of reliable, zero-
carbon electricity.

A Bio-Future for the US-South Korea Strategic Alliance by Zeena Nisar: This paper seeks to characterize the US-South Korea relationship with respect to biotechnology, giving attention to the possible challenges. It provides both policy and industry leaders with an understanding of the different facets of biotechnology and the different areas of cooperation within the US-ROK alliance.
